Average total compensation for senior AI researchers at top companies now exceeds $1 million annually, with signing bonuses of $200,000 to $500,000 becoming standard for candidates with strong publication records or relevant industry experience. Even mid-level AI engineers are commanding packages of $350,000 to $600,000, creating a significant wage premium over other software engineering specializations.
The Great Skills Pivot
The whiplash from layoffs to frenzied hiring reflects a fundamental restructuring of the technology workforce. Companies are investing heavily in retraining existing employees, with Google, Microsoft, and Amazon each committing over $500 million to internal AI upskilling programs. Coding bootcamps and online education platforms have pivoted almost entirely to AI-focused curricula, with enrollment in machine learning courses up 300 percent year-over-year.
"What we're seeing is not a recovery — it's a transformation," said Julia Pollak, chief economist at ZipRecruiter. "The jobs that were eliminated are not coming back because they're being automated.
