The evidence is no longer debatable. Social media, as currently designed, is causing measurable harm to children and adolescents. Rates of anxiety, depression, self-harm, and suicidal ideation among teenagers have surged in lockstep with smartphone and social media adoption. The Surgeon General has declared a youth mental health emergency. Internal documents from social media companies — revealed by whistleblowers — confirm that these platforms' own research reaches the same conclusions that independent scientists have been documenting for years.
We have arrived at this point not through ignorance but through a business model that treats children's attention as a commodity and their psychological vulnerabilities as engagement opportunities. Algorithms designed to maximize time-on-platform exploit adolescents' developmental need for social validation, their susceptibility to social comparison, and their still-developing capacity for impulse control. The result is a product that is, for many young users, functionally addictive.
Beyond Regulation to Redesign
Regulation is necessary but insufficient. Age verification, parental controls, and restrictions on data collection are important guardrails, but they do not address the fundamental design choices that make social media harmful. What is needed is a reconceptualization of what social media for young people should look like — designed from the ground up with developmental appropriateness, not engagement maximization, as the primary objective.
Imagine platforms where algorithms promote content that builds skills and knowledge rather than content that provokes emotional reaction. Where social features are designed to deepen real friendships rather than accumulate superficial connections. Where usage patterns that correlate with declining well-being trigger supportive interventions rather than being exploited for continued engagement. Such platforms are technically feasible — they are simply less profitable under the current advertising-driven business model.
The technology industry will not make these changes voluntarily, because the changes conflict with the economic incentives that drive their business. This is precisely why collective action — through regulation, market pressure, and cultural norm-shifting — is essential. We regulate the safety of toys, food, and pharmaceuticals marketed to children. The argument that digital products should be exempt from similar scrutiny has never been weaker. Our children cannot wait for the industry to develop a conscience. We must act, and we must act now.
